Job overview

We are seeking to appoint potential Clinical Leaders to take forward Perinatal Mental Health Services, particularly to provide clinical expertise in Birmingham and Solihull. The ability to work flexibly in multi-disciplinary teams and in a range of settings is essential. There are strong links with the University of Birmingham and teaching will be an integral part of the post.

Applicants must have full registration with the GMC, MRCPsych or equivalent, Section 12 (2) approval, working towards both approved clinician status and CCT accreditation in General Adult Psychiatry, with experience in Perinatal Psychiatry.

Main duties of the job

Perinatal Mental Health Services are expanding with a focus on developing innovative forms of service delivery. There is an inpatient Mother & Baby Unit located in the Barberry. A comprehensive community perinatal mental health service covering Solihull is being developed and this is advertised as 1.0 WTE post. There is a second post covering East Birmingham and this is a 0.6 WTE post.

Our circa 4000 staff are continuingly striving to “Help People Get Better”. The Trust also has a number of specialist services. This includes the Perinatal Mental Health Service. The Trust is a teaching organisation, playing a prominent part in Medical Education at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate level, also contributing to a wide range of multidisciplinary training programmes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Person specification


Essential criteria
  • Primary medical qualification
  • GMC Registration
  • Membership of The Royal College of Psychiatrists (or other test that might be accepted by the College as equivalent) taken as part of, or on completion, of a Specialist Training programme
  • Section 12 MHA approval and eligible for AC approval.
  • Successful completion of higher specialist training (CCT) in General adult psychiatry or equivalent or within six months of completion.
  • Experience within the field of perinatal psychiatry at senior trainee level
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team in Community, Out Patient In Patient and general hospital liaison settings.
  • Understanding of policies and National guide-lines relating to Perinatal psychiatry, maternal and Child health, including CEMACH, NICE, SIGN and relevant NHS and RCPsych publications
  • Understanding of legislation in relation to Child Protection with appropriate child safeguarding training (Level 3).
  • Evidence of ability to work in a culturally sensitive manner
  • Evidence of management and administrative ability
  • Experience in Medical Education
  • Ability to understand and contribute to the current evidence-base
  • Ability to critically appraise published research
  • Experience of carrying out audit projects
  • Excellent communicator
  • Excellent leader and team player.
  • Highly motivated to provide high quality patient centred services
Desirable criteria
  • Specific training in relation to perinatal psychiatry
  • Computer skills in word processing, presentation and databases
  • Experience of work with patient-support groups relevant to perinatal psychiatry
  • Experience of supervised training in aspects of psychotherapy either through completion of post-graduate courses and/or a series of supervised cases
  • Above Level 3 Child Safeguarding training.
  • Qualification in Medical Education
  • Research experience to a high level within perinatal psychiatry
  • Published research within perinatal psychiatry
  • Presentation at regional or national perinatal mental health meetings
  • Full UK Driving licence
